DIY Nursery Name Collage

Using your child’s name as art is a great way to personalize their room.  Sometimes it’s as simple as adding a single letter to a bookshelf or a monogram to a pillow.  But when I saw how mom Erin chose to incorporate her son Maddox’s name into the room design, I knew I had to share it with you all!

I love that Erin used different techniques and mediums to create a really modern and interesting collage effect for the name.  I think I’ve probably seen all of the individual techniques on Pinterest at some time but it’s the combination of them all into a single piece that really makes this special!
Truthfully, she had me at the string art M.  She used a similar technique to what I used for my “Dream” string art piece here.  Instead of painting the cork backing though, Erin used an even better shortcut and covered it with some white scrapbooking paper. Then she simply inserted the nails along the outline of her “M” and got busy stringing.

For the rest of her letters, she secured the same white scrapbook paper to the inside back of the frame with double-sided tape and then adhered her letters to it using more craft glue.
For the A, she simply cut out an “A”  in a gray paper to use as her template and base.  Then she secured the crayons to it with more craft glue and popped the whole thing into her frame.

A cute “d” cut out of gray scrapbook paper turns into a little track with the addition of some simple white paper strips and a few toy cars.

Another “d” gets covered in Dollar Store puzzle pieces.  Erin took the extra time to select a puzzle that had lots of pieces in colors that coordinated with the rest of the room – reds, blue, whites and greens.

An array of buttons creates the “O”.  There are tutorials for these types of projects everywhere.  Here’s a good one from I Heart Naptime.  The trick is to really pile those buttons on to create some dimension to the overall letter.

The base for the “X” is one flat piece of LEGO that Erin cut into the shape of her letter.  She drew the X on the backside of the LEGO before cutting.  Then she and her husband just had fun arranging the colored LEGO pieces on the X base.
Tip:  If you’re going to do this with something other than an X, W, M, etc make sure you reverse the letter to trace…otherwise you’ll have a backward base when you flip it over!

Doesn’t the full piece look amazing?!  I love that she used a mix of frame colors and sizes too.  To hang this three dimensional piece, Erin rolled out some wrapping paper and used the backside to lay out her frames on the floor.  She then traced around the frames and marked where the picture hangers were.  Using painter’s tape, she hung and centered the paper on the wall.  This is a great way to make sure your final result is straight and centered without ending up with a bunch of holes in your wall!  She hung the M, D, D and X first then she used extra long nails to hang the A and the O.  For extra security, she added some of my favorite 3M Command Strips to the M, D and X frames (so the “a” was secured to the “m” and “d” frame and the “o” was secured to the second “d” and “x” frame).

And of course this post wouldn’t be complete without a cameo appearance by the lucky little man who inspired such a creative piece!  Here is sweet Maddox at 1 month old.

You can see more of Maddox’s fantastic nursery here.  Bravo Erin!  You really did a remarkable job on this room.  Thanks so much for sharing the details of this fun art piece.
